Caring for New Westminster & Burnaby families since 2010

Starlight runs four licensed child care centres on the Burnaby and New Westminster border. We believe children learn best through play, so we keep groups small, staff them with qualified educators, and let curiosity lead the day.

Small groups, qualified educators, and prices that already include the rebate

Our Burnaby daycare centres are located on the border between Burnaby and New Westminster. We are currently part of the BC daycare fee reduction program and our prices reflect the government rebate. All of our facilities are licensed and inspected by Fraser Health and staffed by fully qualified educators.

We strongly believe that it is through play that children learn best. Our daycare program is structured to provide a warm and safe environment with a wide range of materials which allow children to explore, discover, make choices and create to their own interests.

Our daycares are family run and owner-operated. Jenny has been an early childhood educator for over 18 years, holds her full ECE-IT and Special Needs Educator diploma, and works at all of our locations alongside her role as director. Our team works directly with staff and children every day to make sure everyone's needs are met.

Care that grows with your child

Each centre is licensed for a specific age range. Pick the one that matches your child today; many families move between our centres as their child grows.

Infant & Toddler

6 months – 3 years

Gentle routines, responsive care and lots of floor time. Our smallest groups for the youngest children.

Preschool

3 – 5 years

Early reading and writing, basic math, the calendar and seasons, and cultures from around the world.

Multi-Age

9 months – 5 years

Older children model for younger ones and everyone learns to share, take turns and look out for each other.

Our philosophy

Every child grows at their own pace

Throughout our daily individual and group activities, each child develops emotionally, socially and intellectually at their own rate. We tailor our program to each child so every one gets the individual attention they need.

Development through respect

Educators help children develop a deep respect for themselves, teachers, their playmates, parents and their surroundings. This occurs through sharing of ideas and a thoughtful approach to discipline. When ongoing guidance is led by an educator, an environment evolves where children learn to express themselves with positive behaviour.

Guidance that makes learning fun

One of our hopes as educators is to promote a love of learning in children and share our own passion for teaching. Our educators make learning fun and interactive and tailor their approach to each child's needs and age, fostering curiosity while guiding their learning so they explore and love learning about the world around them.

How we handle it

Discipline and behaviour, built on mutual respect

Our child care educators provide positive guidance, incorporating creative teaching and engagement to help children develop self-discipline and inner control over their actions. This approach is based on mutual respect and an understanding of children's needs and development.

Educators support children through redirection, consistent rules, and the acceptance of feelings, while maintaining firmness and fairness. Children are encouraged to express their emotions verbally or physically to discuss and resolve conflicts or misunderstandings with one another.

Both of my kids have attended starlight over the last 8 years and it has been such a wonderful experience! The teachers are caring and always have fun and educational activities planned. My kids come home so excited to tell us about their day and show us the unique art they have made. Jenny and the team are positive and supportive, I can't recommend them enough!

We are so grateful to this wonderful daycare. The teachers are incredibly kind, caring, and attentive to every child. You can truly feel the love and warm atmosphere here. My child goes to daycare with a smile and comes home happy, which means everything to us as parents. My son started at Starlight back when he was 11 months old. Being a first time parent with lots of unknowns, I felt like I was putting him in the best care possible with Starlight. I was given lots of updates, and great communication with all staff members. They even sent me milestone videos that I share with family to this day. To new parents, consider yourself extremely lucky if your child ends up here!

My daughter has been attending Starlight childcare for the past two years, and I cannot express enough how grateful I am to have found such a nurturing and supportive environment. The educators are nothing short of amazing. Every single one has been fabulous with my daughter, showing her the love, patience, and attention she needs to thrive.

From first words to potty training, they have gone out of their way to support my daughter and myself, as a new mom. The owner, Jenny, is an exceptionally kind individual who deeply cares about the children and families. This is reflected in her staff, who my daughter affectionately refers to as her "friends". If you are lucky enough to enrol your child at Starlight, please know you've truly hit the jackpot.

My son was at Starlight Child Care Centre for 2 years before he was off to kindergarten. The staff team is amazing. They are friendly, kind, caring and very professional. My son always had fun and enjoyed the activities, free play, circle time and going outside for nature walks around the neighbourhood. I felt very respected as a parent as there was always open communication about my son's day.

Read the full FAQ
Are your daycares licensed?
All our daycare facilities are fully licensed and inspected by Fraser Health. All staff members are fully qualified and have the required certificates, background checks, and training completed and up to date.
What is your ratio?
Fraser Health sets the licensed educator-to-child ratios. Our infant and toddler centres run 1 educator to 4 children; preschool and multi-age groups run 1 educator to 8 children.
What are your hours?
Our centres are open from 7:30am to 5:30pm, Monday to Friday. Royal Avenue accommodates 9-hour time slots within that window.
Are you part of the daycare fee reduction program?
All of our centres are currently enrolled in the program and our pricing already includes the discount.
What are the subsidies?
The main one is CCFRI (the Child Care Fee Reduction Initiative), which is automatically applied as long as the provider is enrolled. ACCB, the Affordable Child Care Benefit, is income-tested and applied for by you.
